Electrical Design & Construct: Why It Suits Compressed Construction Programmes

How D&C electrical subcontracts collapse the design-build sequence and why this matters on compressed high-rise programmes in Queensland.

High-rise construction programmes have compressed significantly. Builders are under pressure to shorten programmes and reduce preliminaries — all while managing more complex buildings with more services coordination than ever before.

What a D&C electrical subcontract means

Under a conventional subcontract, the electrical subcontractor builds from drawings prepared by a consulting electrical engineer. Under a D&C subcontract, PLE takes both design and construction responsibility — preparing design documentation, obtaining Energex approvals, and building from its own drawings. At completion, PLE certifies both the design (Form 15) and the installation (Form 12).

Why this suits compressed programmes

D&C collapses the design-build sequence. PLE can begin design work while structure is still being planned, run design development in parallel with early works, and progress installation immediately as design is confirmed — rather than waiting for a complete drawing set that may never arrive on schedule.
